Since 1949, when the United Nations sanctioned its use, the International Driver's License (IDL) has allowed International Travelers to drive freely throughout the world.
Although many countries do not recognize native driver's licenses, most countries accept an International Driver's License (IDL). IDLs are honored in more than 150 countries outside the U.S. (See application form for the list of countries.) They function as an official translation of a native driver's license into 8 foreign languages. These licenses are not intended to replace valid original native drivers licenses and should only be used as a supplement to a valid license. IDLs are not valid in an individual’s country of residence.
For security reason a plastic card accompanies the booklet, which also extends driver's identity information. Every plastic card is covered by our Security Shield Hologram which protects and prolongs life of the card eliminating any possibility of the counterfeit.
The IDL offers authentic international translations of pertinent passport and personal data to foreign officials.
An international driver's license must be obtained from your home country. This permit only verifies that you hold a valid license in your home country. It is your foreign driver's license that allows you to drive in the United States. Contact the authorities in your home country to get an international driving permit, as the United States does NOT issue international driver's licenses to foreign visitors.
TIPS ON DRIVING ABROAD
Auto Insurance
Car rental agencies overseas usually provide auto insurance, but in some countries, the required coverage is minimal. When renting a car overseas, consider purchasing insurance coverage that is at least equivalent to that which you carry at home. In general, your U.S. auto insurance does not cover you abroad. However, your policy may apply when you drive to countries neighboring the United States. Check with your insurer to see if your policy covers you in Canada, Mexico, or countries south of Mexico. Even if your policy is valid in one of these countries, it may not meet that country’s minimum requirements. For instance, in most of Canada, you must carry at least $200,000 in liability insurance, and Mexico requires that, if vehicles do not carry theft, third party liability, and comprehensive insurance, the owner must post a bond that could be as high as 50% of the value of the vehicle. If you are under-insured for a country, auto insurance can usually be purchased on either side of the border.
Also, an International drivers license (IDL) is proof that you hold a valid driver's license in your own country. And it provides a translation into almost a dozen languages, mainly so that police and other authorities in other countries can read your license in their own language. It may not be absolutely necessary to have it, since many countries recognize each other's licenses, but traveling with an International drivers license has many advantages.
The permit is intended to overcome the difficulties drivers might have while traveling in other countries that may have widely varying licensing requirements. The IDP is a special license for tourists authorized by United Nations conventions on road safety in 1923, 1943, 1949, and 1968. Nearly 180 countries are signatories.
The International drivers license is printed in several languages-the five official UN languages (English, French, Spanish, Russian, and Chinese) plus German, Arabic, Italian, the Scandinavian languages, and Portuguese. It is valid in all the signatory countries. In addition, many other countries that did not sign the treaty recognize the permit and accept it in their territories.
An International drivers license is easy to obtain here, does not require a driving test, and is available for a small fee. It is, in fact, an official translation of your domestic driver's license.
Requirements
• Applicants for an International drivers license must: be 18 or older,
• have a recognized driver's license,
• submit two passport-type photos, and
• International drivers license their application on an official form provided by the issuing authority.

The IDP must be applied for in the country of origin and cannot be used there in place of a regular driver's license.
